The Kidney Crisis Is Real And Kidney Kars Can Help Save Lives

Imagine waiting years for an organ that could save your life. For more than 100,000 Americans, that’s reality every single day and around 86-88% of them are waiting for a kidney transplant. That means nearly nine out of every ten people on the national transplant list need a kidney.  That’s far more than any other organ.

Lives on Hold And Sometimes Lost

For people with end-stage kidney disease, dialysis keeps them alive, but it’s not a cure. Dialysis requires hours hooked up to a machine several times a week, exacts a profound toll on the body, and carries a survival rate far below that of a successful transplant.

Because of the shortage of human donor kidneys, researchers and physicians are exploring new frontiers. One of the most remarkable stories comes out of a recent experimental pig kidney transplant that bought time for a patient long enough for him to receive a human kidney later. In January 2025, a man received a genetically engineered pig kidney, a procedure called xenotransplantation. That organ kept him alive and off dialysis for nine months and ultimately helped him survive until a matched human kidney became available. While still experimental, procedures like this show how desperate and innovative the search for solutions has become. Scientists hope xenotransplantation could one day help ease the kidney shortage for patients who might otherwise wait years, or die waiting.

A Community in Need Right Here in Utah

Here in Utah and Idaho, 3,000 to 5,000 kidney patients live with this same struggle every day waiting, hoping, praying for a chance at a longer, healthier life. The emotional toll is immense; the physical toll is punishing. For those living with kidney failure, every hour on dialysis is an hour away from living. Every year they remain on the list is another year of uncertainty. And tragically, many never receive the organ they so desperately need.
